The Island

I had a chance to watch The Island last night. Can we say 1984 meets the Matrix? Harvesting humans in a Utopian society, hrmmm.... Anyway, other than the overused plot, subplot, etc, I rather enjoyed the movie. Nice action, the story moved along nicely, and there was never a moment when I wanted to fast-forward out of pure boredom (which is rare for me these days). Scarlett Johansson does a really good job and, I have to say, looks far more appealing these days than she did in something like Lost in Translation (I shudder at the thought of having to watch that piece of garbage ever again). I'm going to rate this movie higher than most would I think, but for a no brainer kind of movie I think it's well done. --7/10

People keep recommending Lost in Translation to me. You hated it?

Oh, not even just a little bit!!! I rate it right up there with Napoleon Dynamite (ND) and Gosford Park. Gosford Park wasn't quite in the same style, but it was just as boring. From what I've read people loved both LIT and ND, but I just couldn't stand them. I need things to happen in my movies. If I wanted to see 24 hours of boring life I would just put a camera on me for a day and watch it the next. I just thought of another : About Schmidt. <shivers>

Ack! All of my favourite movies... BASHED! ND made me howl!

Sorry Heather. I had to do it though. Nothing really happens in either movie. I will admit, though, that ND was better than LIT.

I agree, ND was definately much better that LIT. In fact, now that I think about it, I don't think I really liked LIT all that much either. I think I was slightly disturbed by the subtle attraction that seemed to be evident between the two key characters.

Maybe people just think I'm so boring that they only recommend boring movies to me, thinking they'll be just my style?
: )

We should start a list of good movies where nothing much happens. One that pops to mind is Dazed and Confused, which I can't really recommend, but I loved it anyway. The 70s vibe is just too funny, and a few of the characters make the whole thing worth watching, despite the obvious shortcomings.

Oh, Jer, the more stupid a movie is, the more likely it is that I will love it! I can't explain it. Joe Dirt, Dude, Where's My Car, etc. On the other hand, my all time favourite movies have to be You've Got Mail, Love Actually, and Under a Tuscan Sun. I'm such a sucker for romantic comedies.

If you like romantic comedies then I highly recommend "Mr. & Mrs. Smith". Here in MB it is no longer in the theatre, probably on its way to the "Cheap Seats". Ryan and I both really liked it, and we tend to like completely different types of movies. It's got eye-candy and action for the boys, and eye-candy and romance for the girls. When we left the theatre we felt like we could conquer the world together. If you haven't seen it already, put in on the top of your rentals list.
